Why I don't want Ricky down the street

Maybe I should explain why I’m not thrilled that Ricky and mom live down the street.

  • He has to change schools again – and she probably won’t take the time to do it for a while. I’m sure he’ll be out of school for months now. This will be about his sixth school in two years.

  • Every time she moves her welfare checks get lost in the system and she goes into emergency mode without food, gas etc. I always get panicked calls, and I refer her to a couple of churches I know that can help. Same routine every few months.

  • Her car is old and decrepit and shouldn’t be on the road for more than a mile to the grocery store. As I mentioned in my previous post, we are twenty minutes from anything.

  • She doesn’t have a driver’s license or insurance – drive a few blocks to get groceries is one thing, driving a long way every day is another. She’s been in jail before for driving infringements – like no license. She’s a repeat offender on this issue. AURGH.

  • It is too easy for her to drop by announced. I guess that one is obvious.

  • It costs more money to live out of town - heat, gas, etc… Which she clearly doesn’t have.

  • There isn’t any support system where she lives. She won’t have a trailer park full of people willing to baby-sit or watch out for Ricky. He doesn’t have other kids to play with. They are pretty isolated.

  • If it storms, her car won't make it home in any kind of snow storm. I'd hate her to be stuck somewhere out on a snowy road.

I’m sure I could go on, but she’s excited about living way out where no one can find her.

Hasn’t she heard that wherever you go, there you are?

Recently I was involved with writing a song about a young woman's difficult choice to give her son up for adoption. I thought the song might bring some healing and peace to people. It can be downloaded at www.broadjam.com The name of the song is: Someone Else's Son. You'll have to look for it under the songwriter's name which is Mary Ott. I hope this little piece of art, brings some healing. Sincerely, Everywoman
