Well, what do you know. ABC TV News division is stepping up to the plate and educating the public on the foster care system, the children available for adoption, and those who age out of the system without ever being adopted.

Congratulations to our Foster care, adoption.com blogger Bill who was interviewed as one of the adoption success stories. He and his wife found their daughter on a photo listing and adopted her out of foster care. His story is one featured on ABC's World News Tonight, - this Friday night - June 2, 2006.

Did you know that over 100,000 children in foster care are currently available for adoption?

Many of these children are older or sibling groups or special needs. Many will never be adopted and will just ‘age out’ of the system. In other words, they will group up and out of the house, without the support system of a family. As young adults, they will have to find mentors themselves or rely on their own resources to make it. Many of these aged-out foster children enlist in the military to try and find a sense of belonging.

There are over 500,000 children who are in the foster system every year - most stay in three different home over an three year period.

I don’t think most people even understand or know about the system. I know I didn’t before I checked into adoption.

As a society, we need a wake up call. We need to help these families. Maybe this intense media scrutiny this week will help.

The morning show also reports on solutions, success stories and how people can foster or adopt.

* WORLD NEWS TONIGHT reports on a program in Pittsburgh that focuses on an alternative to foster care and the trend to internet adoption.

* NIGHTLINE's Cynthia McFadden follows young people who are aging out of foster care, with nowhere to go and few resources.

* 20/20 takes a second look at a thriving program to help get foster children placed for adoption by having professionals photograph them.

* ABC News.com reports further on the foster care with results from an ABC News/Time Magazine poll on foster care.
