The caseworker went on to tell me about severe abuse in this little girls life at a young age, that resulted in the girl acting out in sexual, violent and abusive ways herself. When stable, the girl was a joy to be around, but could explode without warning creating havoc to everyone near her.
The girl had worn out her welcome at many foster homes until, finally, this home seemed to be a good match.
The foster parents did not have other children at home, and could devote a great deal of time to therapeutic foster parenting – but they could not adopt her.
I never knew why they couldn’t adopt this girl, but apparently it wasn’t in the cards for the family.
Yesterday, while looking at the newest photos of the waiting children, I wondered about the girl I called on last winter.
I wished I’d kept the phone number so I could follow up.
My heart hopes she is still doing ok in her foster family, and that they become a forever family for her – even without official adoption papers.
So, yesterday, as my friend and I looked through the photos I wondered about each child, but didn’t write down any phone numbers myself.
My friend however took her time. She peered intently into each photo and connected with a few of the children.
She is serious about adopting.
She wrote down eight ID and phone numbers and will be making her phone calls today.
I wonder what she’ll be told about each child, and am curious to see if she adopts again from looking at a photo of a waiting child.
I hope so. They need adoptive families.
Go see an exhibit near you.
It will move you.
Maybe to adopt.
The Focus Exhibit is on again till February 2007.
Colorado Springs, Colo. – Beginning November 30th, Focus on the Family will demonstrate its passion for and commitment to America’s foster children by participating in Colorado’s second annual Heart Gallery. The national Heart Gallery exhibit, located at the Focus on the Family Welcome Center, raises adoption awareness by displaying unique professional photos of approximately 50 foster children, representing 7 counties in the state. Last year’s Colorado Heart Gallery had a 30 percent success rate for getting children into their forever homes. Focus on the Family is the only Colorado Springs exhibit on the state tour, and will host the exhibit through February 28th.
