If you’ve been reading my blog you know I love Love and Logic.
Unfortunately, since Ricky has been with us, ![]()
I’ve forgotten to use it. Sing songing OH OH, How Sad, takes a bit of an effort to get into the habit, and I’m out of the habit. I spend more time than I want to putting the kids in time out, drawing a blank in the heat of the moment of my other choices.
Still, I try to follow through on some of the tricks. And one of the tricks is choices for the children.
One of the things I do religiously is ask “Would you like some ideas?”, when the kids are faced with a problem.
This morning, Ricky was screaming “I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I WANT one”.
“That’s nice” I’d reply.
And He’d scream back, RIGHT NOW.
I’ve been trying to instill a bit of respect – at least for me, if not for his own mom or the world in general. I don’t respond to demands or screaming, and if it goes on and on I just turn off my ears. Literally, I reach up and twist my earlobes and I don’t hear a thing anymore.
Drives the kids nuts.
Anyway, After about three minutes of this demanding for a sandwich, I asked him if he’d like some ideas to help him get his sandwich.
Nicky loves this game. I can get pretty outrageous in some ideas, and I saw just the hint of a smile come out as he sullenly screamed YEA.
Well, I said, You could wait until you are sixteen years old, get your drivers license, get a job at the Taco Shop, earn enough cash to get some car insurance, ask nicely to borrow the car, drive to Bobob’s work (my hubby), and ask him to make you a sandwich. Do you like that idea?
No he smiled into his lap.
Ok, here’s another idea:
How about you go get a job, earn enough money to take a plane to Georgia where there are lots of peanuts. Then you look up Ex-President Jimmy Carter and ask him to help you get some peanuts. He made on a fortune on peanuts and probably has some great ideas for you. You’ll have to find a way to smash them into butter. Then you get a plane to California where grapes grow. Find a vineyard, ask permission to pick some grapes and them smash them in your toes to make jelly….
EUEWW he screamed. No way!
Ok, how about…
I didn’t even finish.
Hey, I’ve got an idea he said, How about I say please?
Ok, I said, try that.
Please may I have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
Certainly, yes you may young man and thank you for asking so nicely!

I LOVE Love and Logic! Love it love it love it!
My favorite L and L story is when my birth son (around age 11 or so) came to me one day and said, “Mom, can I do _____, oh wait, and then you’ll say _____________, and then I’ll say __________…. OH, NEVER MIND!”
