Many of the blogs I write are quite “heavy” because, after all, life in foster care is not a fun subject. Most of the kids don’t get to laugh often and as parents of foster kids, we don’t always get to laugh either.
Lately, Hannah has been cracking me up. Some things are just plain funny, and other are a six year old not quite understanding the other world yet. I thought I’d share some of these with you and hopefully add a little bit of levity to an otherwise hard subject.
One day Hannah and I were running errands and she was wearing her “fancy” shoes, which aren’t the best for a day of activity. As we were leaving Wal-Mart, she turned to me and said “Mommy, I have a foot headache.”
One day my husband was eating something that had green olives. Hannah was curiously eyeing his olive. He asked her if she wanted it and she responded, “I don’t eat that kind, but I’ll try it.” (She does like BLACK olives.)
I love to try new recipes and my family members are usually pretty willing guinea pigs for me, but last night Hannah was not very enthusiastic when her food was plated. The dish I made was topped with chives and dill. Hannah was poking at it with her fork when she said, “Mommy, there’s grass on this.”
Sometimes Hannah can be quite gullible and it’s fun to mess around with her. Today, she and my respite kid, J, were supposed to be up in their rooms having quiet time. I was working on the kitchen floor and accidentally knocked over a stoneware pitcher and shattered it. When she and J came downstairs I asked them to clean it up for me. This is the conversation that followed.
Hannah: “Oh, so that’s what that noise was.”
Mom: “No, raccoons came through the house.”
Hannah: “Where?”
As we were having our cuddle time in bed this morning, Hannah was making a point to smell me, and then smelled my arm pits. (Don’t ask. I don’t know why.) She said that I still smelled good, but that Daddy always stinks.
I know that there are many more things that she has said, but they are just not coming to me right now. We have to take these light moments when we get them. Feel free to share things your kids have said that have made you laugh. We can all use a little humor in our lives.
