New Issues for Polygamy Ranch Children

There is a new issue coming up for the children that were removed from the polygamy ranch in Texas, and it has the potential to be a rather serious issue.

It seems that there is no documentation readily available that these children have had their normal immunizations.

I know that there is a bunch of controversy over immunizing children because of the potential of mercury in immunizations, but I believe that situation has been taken care of.

Some people may wonder if the children, especially the older children, really need to be immunized and my personal answer is yes. Recently, here in Wisconsin, we had an outbreak of measles, and an adult woman who was diagnosed with Rubella.

The other issue is that foster care regulations require that all children in care have current immunizations, both for their good and for the good of the other children. Imagine an outbreak of measles or chicken pox in a foster home.

Further complicating the fact is that many of these young girls are pregnant or have already had children, but have never been immunized. There were 463 children removed from that ranch. Can you imagine wading through paperwork and trying to figure out how to accomplish this task?

We’re facing a similar situation here, but a much smaller scale. Hannah’s immunizations were not current when she entered our home. In most cases she would not have been allowed to enter school, but the fact that we were working to get the immunizations current made it possible for her to start. Since we didn’t have other children in the house at the time, it wasn’t a huge issue for our family. Sammy was only home about once a month so he was not at great risk, and his immunizations re current.

To add yet another complication to this issue, is the fact that the children were so segregated from the “normal” community, I cannot imagine the stress that these children must feel with being confronted with a doctor’s office, needles for shots and other things that other children are exposed to at a much younger age. What would it be like to have your first immunization at sixteen years old?

I imagine that more issues like this are going to surface as the enormity of this continues to unravel. Will we ever know the full scope of the impact this ranch has had?

Ah, The immunization controversy. I agree with most of what you said, except I think that we are somewhat over protecting our kids, or thinking we are, but giving them so many immunizations. For example, chicken pox is not something I consider serious enough to immunize against because the consequences could outweigh the benefits. I have done the research and found out that shingles can occur just as often from the vaccine as from the actual virus.

Anywho, enough of that. Those kids need as much TLC as possible. They must be terrified.

My question may be oversimplified: Why do we think it is necessary to immunize all of these many children and young adults RIGHT NOW? They've lived their whole lives in this community without being immunized, people can get waivers for immunizations due to religious, medical, or philosophical reasons in most states - why the rush? Is it just because they are now in state care and they can do it? Are we really thinking about what is BEST for these kids, or what power we can exert over them? Yes, it would be traumatic to take children who have already been traumatized by this whole ordeal, into a doctors office and have them forceibly vaccinated. Why do that to them RIGHT NOW? All it is doing is proving that the outside world really cannot be trusted, something they've apparently been told and have experienced first hand already. I had one caseworker tell me to get a foster childs' shots "caught up" so I took her to the health dept. I'm thinking they'd give her a shot and we'd make another appt. - oh no, they can her a shot in each arm, each leg and the oral polio vaccine all in one visit. By the next appt., the child was mentally "checking out" when it was time for the shots - it was scary and completely unnecessary to put her through that and I would never do it again.

Also, I had a chicken pox virus go through my daycare about 14 years ago before the vaccine was mandated. I think there were about 12 kids (maybe more) who caught it all together. They all did fine, and I kept on watching them since everyone had it anyway - chicken pox and measles are definitely not the end of the world, just inconvenient and uncomfortable for a few days for the great majority.

If Sammys vaccines are up to date, and all vaccines work the way they're supposed to, you should have NOTHING to worry about when it comes to Hannah not being caught up yet. Even if she caught something, his vaccine immunity should protect him 100%, right?
