Who doesn’t like to get chocolate in their treat bag while out trick-or-treating? The Wendy’s food chain is helping foster children this Halloween, while giving kids a chocolaty treat.

You can purchase coupons at your local Wendy’s restaurant for $1 and receive a booklet of certificates for a free Jr. Frosty to give out at Halloween. The money raised from these sales goes to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

The foundation works to raise awareness for adoption from foster care and to help children find homes. This coupon program is one of the ways that they do this. Dave Thomas, the found of Wendy’s, was adopted himself and developed the foundation to further the awareness of adoption in general, but specifically adoption from foster care.

In 2007 the sales of these coupons raised $1.6 million. That’s a nice amount of money to help foster children. The first coupon books were sold in 1992. Imagine how much money has been raised in the last 16 years simply by selling these little booklets. In a time when we have a shortage of foster homes and money is tight for everyone, it’s great to see how a simple dollar can add up and benefit the kids that need it so badly. Wendy’s does a promotion over Father’s Day weekend that allows fathers to receive a free Frosty on Father’s Day but donates money from other Frosty sales. This program raised $1.7 million in 2008 alone.

The other benefit to the coupons is that it’s hard for your or the kids to eat them all before the ghosts and goblins can show up on your doorstep. The booklets can be purchased through October 31, 2008 and redeemed by February 1, 2009. If you’re planning to give out goodies anyway, why not give out these coupons and benefit foster children?
