Today is my husband’s 40th birthday. I can say that, since I am younger than he is.

We do not have big plans for the day, but will be celebrating with the kids. I will travel to Sammy’s treatment foster home this afternoon to pick him for the weekend.

Birthdays ARE a big deal at our house. Much like our kids, my birthday was never celebrated, so I made a vow that my family would remember their birthdays. Most years it’s a simple family celebration.

We do have some traditions that are a must. The birthday person gets to have breakfast in bed, and they choose the breakfast. They get to open their gifts while in bed. If the birthday falls on a weekend, the birthday person gets to choose what they do for the day, and chooses their dinner for the evening. They have the choice of going out, or having Mom cook their favorite meal. There is also the birthday cake, which I usually make. There have been some store bought ones in the past, usually at Sammy’s request, but I am usually the baker and decorator. I am not a professional cake decorator, nor have I ever taken a class, but my family doesn’t care.

We have done large parties in the past, and they were enjoyed at the time, but the fallout afterward was horrible. In the case of the kids, the amount of gifts is usually rather small, since they can be over stimulated by too many things. Each family member contributes something that they either made or picked out. Gifts are not bought and a family member’s name put on. They must participate in the person’s birthday.

Above is the picture of this year’s birthday cake. As I mentioned in a previous blog, Larry is a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He goes on about 100 ambulance calls a year, so the ambulance was fitting for him. The stripes on the ambulance are blue instead of red, because those are the colors of our town’s ambulance.

Larry does read this blog, so please wish him a Happy Birthday today!
