Football player came from foster care

My husband is a sports nut. With NASCAR and professional football coinciding right now, our weekends are consumed by sports. My TV showed nothing but sports all weekend and then again Monday night. Believe me, this was not my choice.

However, every so often something interesting creeps into sports. One of them is a player for the Tennessee Titans, Keith Bulluck. He is a former foster child. What was supposed to be a three week stay, turned into six years. He went into foster care at the age of twelve, so he ended up aging out of the system. When he “aged out” he had a scholarship to Syracuse University, which eventually lead to his pro football career.

Even more impressive is that he has started the Keith Bulluck Believe and Achieve Foundation, Inc. The website is not fully functional yet, but what I have read about this organization is wonderful.

The main focus of the Believe and Achieve Foundation is helping foster kids. Wow. There’s a concept. He donates tickets to every one of his home football games, gives turkeys to foster families at Thanksgiving, backpacks full of school supplies, and gives foster kids Halloween and Christmas parties. Almost makes me want to be a foster kid.

And the things that impress me don’t stop there. Here are some more great accomplishments:

  • 2006 Spokesperson for National Foster Care Awareness Month

  • 2006 Walter Payton Man of the Year because of his charity work

  • 2004 Honorary Chairman of Foster Care Awareness in hometown of Rockland County, New York.

  • He is currently enrolled in Harvard Business school to learn more business management. This program is offered through the National Football League (NFL).

I’m not a Tennessee Titans fan. I have to cheer for my Green Bay Packers, but chances are my TV will be tuned to a Titans game in the future and I’ll be watching this young man. It sounds like he is a great role model for foster kids and kids in general.

What a GREAT story!! This is such a great example of making lemonade out of life's lemons. He could be bitter but, instead, he shows so much compassion to these children, making the world a better place. I am very impressed!!
