my children were issued new social security numbers when their adoption was final, I gave no hint I even knew their names when I went to get the SS number and made it get changed everywhere, now state medicaid messed that up for my son, but everyone else got it right

we had b-parents claiming the kids on taxes after the adoption was final, before we got new birth records and ss cards and numbers (and they were in trouble for that...) and I had to re-file new tax form after deadline with correct info when it was received in something like May/June

this would be a case I'd just lie to the SSA and say I don't know (I mean we can't get their old medical records even, so why should the SS number carry on??)

This is not like for step parent adoptions, but I mean for people adopting from foster care, etc...

Actually on another board, most people as long as they say they don't know the old SS number have not had any trouble just getting a new one assigned...

we did have cases her with the tax fraud and the bio parents using the kids info to get credit and ruining their bio child's credit..

One of my now adult daughters, came to me at the age of 7 with a phone bill over 2000. Her bmom had used her ss# and name to get a phone, then made numerous calls to the psychic hotline. I was able to get it dismissed based on her age.

My son's gfriend's mother stole her identity when she was 10 years old. She had to pay her mom's old electric bill, even though she could prove she was 10, before the electric company would turn on her lights for her apartment. Sad. My first adopted sons' mom attempted to use his ssn to get food stamps but was unable to do so. Another of my adult children was refused a job due to $30000 of debt on his credit report. He is still trying to determine who used his identity to clear this up. What a messed up system.
