Hot on the heels of the anti-gay adoption story out of Florida, comes an even more repulsive story, also out of Florida.
Police were at a home where a 2 year old child was living with her parents. The home was infested with thousands of roaches. The sink was piled full of dirty dishes, clothes strewn everywhere, a nearly empty refrigerator also infested with roaches and other things that would turn your stomach.
The police report indicates that the roaches were crawling on top of the child while the child was in the crib. To top it all off the reports indicate that the family has only lived at this location for about four months.
I have lived in the south and I know that roaches are difficult to handle. I never had more than one or two in any place that I lived. If you live in an area that is prone to roaches, you know that you take trash out immediately, you don’t leave food out, you don’t leave dirty dishes in the sink and so on. These are just normal parts of life.
Obviously, these parents didn’t really care about the living conditions of their daughter. Photos of packs of cigarettes on a table are followed by photos of a refrigerator with bread, some condiments and a little bit of milk. I wouldn’t bathe my dog in the tub, much less put a child in it.
Now, this story may not seem all that significant, but coming on the heels of a story where the sexual orientation of a parent is what determines a fit parent, this is unreal. The comment left by one of the readers of the story directly applies here. This is the comment:
I’m sure there are real mom and dad families out there that will miss an opportunity to lovingly care for this child, to give him the proper teaching of life.
As far as I can tell, these are this child’s “real” parents. Is this child being lovingly cared for and given the proper teaching of life? Is that happening while the child swats off the roaches that infest her crib? This child has been removed from her home and is now going to have a life of figuring out who she is and how she fits into society and various families.
A male and female caregiver pair do not alone make parents. Just take a look at this little girl.
