Celebrate National Adoption Day?

You may have heard:

It’s National Adoption Month and tomorrow, Saturday, is National Adoption Day!

I’ve written about the day, which will post in the morning, but I’ve started wondering if adoptive families with already adopted children celebrate this day?

Sort of like Mothers Day or a Birthday?

I know we don’t. I didn’t even remember our own adoption day anniversary last year until my sister called.

It’s been two years today!

Really? Today? Wow.

I love celebrations, but Hubby and I decided very early on that we wouldn’t put a big deal on ‘gotcha day’ or K’s adoption day. She actually came to live with us on a whole different day and time and year and quietly Hubby and I both say Thanks when that day rolls around. But we don’t make a big deal of it or celebrate it.

Birthdays? That’s another story. My bicycle riding maniac Hubby has bought K a bicycle for her third birthday in a couple of weeks.

We’ve got two parties planned, - one for family and birth mom, one for friends – and a cake and cupcakes ordered and goodies bags started and…

Well, it’ll be a big celebration.

I’m thankful for adoption day.

I’m glad it brings awareness to waiting families and also gets children adopted who’ve been in the system.

From National Adoption Day website:

Each day, about 114,000 children in the foster care system are waiting to be adopted into a permanent, loving home. Child welfare agencies face numerous barriers to moving children out of foster care and into permanent families, including difficulties with terminating parental rights, recruiting adoptive homes and child welfare case management. Many of these children spend years waiting for a family and will “age out” of foster care without ever being placed into a permanent home.

The National Adoption Day Coalition works to draw attention to these children and celebrate all families that adopt. The Coalition is comprised of seven partners: the Alliance for Children’s Rights, Casey Family Services, Children’s Action Network, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption®, Freddie Mac Foundation and Jockey International®. It has commissioned the Urban Institute and the National Conference of State Legislatures to conduct a state-by-state review of all legislation introduced and passed by state legislatures relating to foster care adoption over the past five years.

Nah, not in my house, we don't! (Smile). I celebrate our reunion though - privately - no huge celebration (except in my head).
