I love to read and my kids have developed that passion as well. You will often find both of them with books in their hands. Reading with your kids is always a good thing, especially if this is not something that your child is used to. The books listed below can give some great messages to your kids, along with having that special one on one time that kids love to have with their parents.

Corduroy by Don Freeman

I love this book as it is, but it is such a wonderful story that our kids can relate to. Corduroy is a stuffed bear in a store, but he is missing a button so no one wants to buy him. He wanders the store looking for his missing button, but never finds it. The next day a little girl comes to get him because she loves him just the way he is.

For kids who have had a hard start to life, and feel flawed, this is a great story to show that they can be loved just as they are.

How Are You Peeling by Saxton Freymann

This is a fun book to help children understand emotions. Fruits and vegetables have been carved and cut to show different emotions in a fun way. When is the last time you saw an orange scowl? This is a great way to get kids talking and identifying emotions that they may not understand.

Before I Was Your Mother by Kathryn Lasky

Do your kids think that you were always a grown up and you can’t possibly understand what it’s like to be a kid? My son thought I was born before there were cars. This book has a mother talking about her life as a child and things that she did, memories that she had. It is a great way to remind your kids that you are a person apart from being their mother. You can also get conversations started about what they like to do, things you might have in common, and family traditions.

A Day With Mom by Sonali Fry

This Holly Hobbie based book has several great aspects to it. In the beginning a batch of cookies gets dropped, but all is forgiven. Mother and daughter bake up a new batch of cookies, and use a cookie cutter that the mother used when she was a child. The book comes with two cookies cutters and recipes so you can create memories and build memories along with working with the senses.

Enjoy some times with your kids and maybe one of these books will become a favorite of your child.
