As I was dropping Hannah off at pre-school, I heard this song. I had heard it before, but for some reason I had a light bulb moment this morning. Is this a song about adoption?
After doing some research, I discovered that Kellie Pickler was raised in a kinship placement. When she was two, her mother relinquished custody to Kellie's grandfather. Her parents have both had law enforcement involvement and have served time in jail.
It's not a pretty life. Her mother was charged with writing bad checks and prescription forgery. Her father was an alcoholic and drug addicted, and spent time in prison after stabbing a man.
Does this sound like something your kids might have been through? How did this young woman come out on top? I think through the stability of her grandparents. Her grandmother passed away 3 years go, but her grandfather is still in her life. Good for them for stepping up and being the constant in her life.
This young woman has taken the thoughts and feelings of our kids and put them into a song. She was able to do so because they are her thoughts and feelings as well.
If you’re not familiar with Ms. Pickler, she was an American Idol contestant but was voted off. She was only 19 when she was on Idol. Now that she has achieved fame and financial success, she is giving back. One of her charitable causes is
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
With all that being said, here is part of the song “I Wonder” by Kellie Pickler.
Sometimes I think about you
Wonder if you're out there somewhere thinking bout me
And would you even recognize
The woman that your little girl has grown up to be
Cause I look in the mirror and I'll I see
Are your brown eyes lookin back at me
They're the only thing you ever gave to me at all

Despite everything she has achieved, the pain of not having her parents in her life is quite evident in this song. In various web pages about her, it is said that she tears up when she talks about her parents.
Have her parents heard this song and thought about the beautiful little girl that they gave up? It had an emotional effect on me, and I'm not her mother.
