Pastor Paddles Son

There is a story out of a Wisconsin about a pastor being charged with child abuse.

It seems this pastor paddled his son, literally. He has a large paddled that he used to spank his12 year old son, leaving bruises on his buttocks. The case is going to a jury trial since the judge feels there is not clear cut evidence if there was a felony committed. There must be more to this story than has been released since one of the things that we learned during our abuse investigation was that bruising indicated abuse. We were told we could spank our children but if you... more

Bad Economy Hurts Foster Care

This will not come as any shock to anyone, but the economy stinks. Everyone is trying to make ends meet with a very uncertain future. Most people reading this blog have probably felt it in their own homes. As the weather grows colder here in Wisconsin, my husband and I are looking for ways to reduce our heating costs since fuel oil prices nearly match the gas prices at the pumps. This means a big hit to our budget each month.

Foster families are just like regular families. The economy is hurting them as well. Expenses for their foster children are rising... more

Horrific Child Abuse Story

There are few child abuse stories that can really get to me anymore because I’ve heard so many of them, but this one got me.

An 8 year old girl snuck out of her house and a neighbor found her walking down a gravel road. She was found beaten, bruised and bloodied. She also told the neighbor that she had not eaten in several days.

Police went to investigate and the mother admitted to beating the girl with a “hard heeled” shoe. When they investigated the home further, they found the bodies... more

I have blogged about the Nebraska Safe Haven Law here and here. This was a bad law that is backfiring in ways in that are going to hurt children.

In the latest case, a sibling group of nine children were left by their father at the Creighton University Medical Center on Wednesday. The children were between the ages of 1 and 17. So far sixteen children have been surrendered since the law took... more

Unfortunately, there is never a shortage of news stories of parents abusing their children. This one has garnered the attention of the District Attorney in Washington County in Wisconsin.

A 20 year old woman is several months pregnant and is a habitual drug user. Apparently the police are quite familiar with her. They are taking this a step further and have issued a warrant for the arrest of the mother.

The... more

Child Removed From Roach Infested Home

Hot on the heels of the anti-gay adoption story out of Florida, comes an even more repulsive story, also out of Florida.

Police were at a home where a 2 year old child was living with her parents. The home was infested with thousands of roaches. The sink was piled full of dirty dishes, clothes strewn everywhere, a nearly empty refrigerator also infested with roaches and other things that would turn your stomach.

The police report indicates that the roaches were crawling on top of the child while the child was in the crib. To top it all off the reports... more

Foster Children in Houston and Galveston

My best friend lives between Houston and Galveston. I am still waiting for word that they are OK and how their home is after Hurricane Ike.

This got me to thinking about the kids in foster care in Galveston and Houston. Galveston is a city, no actually an island with a population of approximately 57,000 people. They have foster homes. Galveston was under mandatory evacuations before Hurricane Ike and for those who stayed behind they are now forced from their homes due to flooding and damage.

This puts the kids in foster care into yet another state... more

I have been following this story for several days now, and each article that comes out gives more disgusting details.

One of the leaders of the Illinois Council on Adoptable Children is under investigation for child abuse against three girls in her home. The initial report stated that Patricia Cooper permitted her biological son to sexually assault the girls over an eight year period. The son, Christopher Cooper is now being held in jail without bond and is being charged... more

Illinois Budget Cuts Affect Children

Being a Wisconsin native, I have a love/hate relationship with the state of Illinois, but this latest article has me questioning the mentality of the elected officials.

A news story came out announcing budget cuts for the state that will harm the most at risk children. The government could not pass a balanced budget, so government programs are being cut. Cuts include 179 jobs in the Department of Children Family Services and another 73 jobs in the Department... more

Nebraska's New Safe Haven Law

Posted by : Kelly in Foster Adoption Blog at 01:40 pm , 545 words, 1015 views
Categories: In the News!

Safe Haven laws are meant to allow a mother to leave her child with a responsible party and allow the child to be placed for adoption. The main purpose of the law is to prevent mothers who are afraid of coming forward from potentially killing their babies. There are mothers who are afraid to admit to being pregnant and the Safe Haven laws give them an option to allow their child to live, rather than hiding.

Nebraska’s new law takes things quite a bit further. It allows for the mother to surrender a child up the age of 19. Most states set the limit at anywhere... more
