A fantastic report by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute is bringing awareness to some of the issues involved in transracial adoption and the need for parent education.
My friend, Elaine, has a very multi-cultural family and I love how this family works together and does not see the “differences” in each other. They are simply family.
I’m all for transracial adoption, don’t get me wrong. ... more

First of all, thank you for indulging me in my time off. The time grieving my sweet dog was helpful, along with being emotional about Kory’s birthday yesterday and having a busy few days getting ready for the events of today, it’s been a roller coaster week.
This morning our family attended the Bat Mitzvah of two girls and the Bar Mitzvah of their brother. It was a beautiful ceremony. Since we’re... more

I get all kinds of news articles about foster care, special needs adoption and various other things. I see articles about foster parents that are getting kudos in their town because they adopted a sibling group, or a medically fragile child, or some other thing. I think to myself “I know lots of parents like that” but they never appear on a news link or receive any praise. So I want to profile some of the parents that I admire.
I could start with one of the bloggers on here but that seems rather redundant. You are already... more

Since my last post touch a little bit on trans racial adoption, I thought it only fitting that we devote an entire blog to this subject.
There are many books available. The Adoption Shop has a few titles, but can’t begin to scratch the surface of what’s available. Amazon.com... more

I don’t watch Ellen, but over on the Christian Adoption blog, Marie wrote about a statement that Queen Latifah made on the Ellen Degeneres show. It seems that Queen Latifah (aka Dana Adams) wants to adopt children. OK, not really newsworthy these days, lots of celebrities are doing it.
Part of what makes this newsworthy is that she wants to adopt from the states, and that she wants to adopt children “from the hood”. From the news clips... more
There are so many wonderful books available, but how do you know what to read with your child? What if some books set off a trauma trigger? Following is a list of books that I have previewed, and loved.
"Little Heroes #2: Adoption and Foster Care" Designed to help parents and children understand the foster care and adoption process. This issue is a true story about two brothers, Robert and Phillip,... more

By now you probably know I didn’t check the OK box for African American Children
on my fost-adopt form. I've been writing about my self imposed rules over the last few days and why I made them, and that troublesome little box ….
To refresh, here are the rules for accepting my next fost-adopt placement based upon a phone call we got last week.
1. I only want a child younger than K 2. We do not want a sibling group 3. We did not click the OK box for African American children on our last application. 4. I would... more
Today K and I went to a local restaurant that has a nice play area in back.
It’s the type of place where you order your food, (nice organic beans and rice, pizza with spelt or wheat - or regular - crust, salads with garbanzo beans, you get the idea,) and then sit down with a number. They bring the food to you when it's ready.
The play area is mainly for preschool children and a lot of stay at home moms congregate there at lunch time. Occasionally I run into someone I know, and often I recognize the other moms.
So, anyway, K and I were ordering. Cheese pizza for her, salad... more
